FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GETTING STARTED

What documents do I send?
First we need to get you set up in our system and determine your requirements and detail levels.  To do that we of course need to have a conversation, then we will need the following:
1.  A pdf sample of one of your previous projects.  This will show us what you want your drawings to look like, and we can then determine the level of style and detail you want for your drawings.
2.  Next step is to send us a previous project in autocad.  This allows us to make a template for your drawings, which will contain the line layers, dimensions styles, text fonts, and your company logo.  We then use this template to produce your drawings so that they look just the way your have always presented your drawings.

(If you have never had shop drawings done and do not have any of the previous documents mentioned, we can help you develop your own drawing style and detail level to customize your presentation.)

Once we have you in the system we are ready to quote a project: We will need the following documents:
1. We need your scope, a list of what you quoted for the project.  It should contain the project information such as Project Name, Location, GC name, Architects name.  Also the rooms you are going to provide and the items within that room that you have quoted, along with a brief description of what the item is made of ie:  plam, wood veneer etc. This document should also contain what you are NOT providing, this is important!!  Example, you are providing the cabinets but not the stone tops or glass or plumbing or electrical, etc. We can then annotate the drawings as such and therefore everyone knows what you are NOT providing as well as what you are.
2. All architectural documents pertaining to the project, drawings, addendums, RFI’s, and bulletins.
3. Any and all additional information that you can provide from your own in-site into the project, this can be done with email, documents, or conversation.

We then take all that and provide you with an itemized quote, clear, concise and easy to understand. You review your quote, send an email approving the quote and we get started.

What is your average turnaround time?
Turnaround time on any project depends on its size and complexity, however you tell us when you need it and we will let you know if we can meet it.  All our quotes for projects have a completion date, and we have not missed one yet. However, if essential information is required after quoting is not provided in a timely manner the completion date would move out.

While the initial project with us will take a bit more time we are generally able to start on an established clients project within a few days of receiving it. The time to completion can be anywhere from a day to months, again size and complexity dependent.

PROJECT SPECS

Are field checks included?
Field checks are not included in the original quote and are not usually required by the client.  Clients often apply the field checks themselves (if they have autocad ) or they just do the math and markup their pdf sets for the needed adjustments

However we will apply field checks if required but the following applies with BMWE and most other drafting services:
First there is no liability to BMWE because we did not collect the field checks. The field checks provided will be considered finish face of structure to finish face of structure unless otherwise clearly annotated and the thickness of the missing material is provided.

All field check dimensions will be applied with diligence and annotated as “collected by client”.
The drawings are then sent back to the client and they are required to verify proper application of the dimensions. IE:  The proper point of origin and point of termination and that the proper items were modified to meet the field check dimension.

Are red lines included?
The red lines that you make on your review set are included in the original quote. However the architect or designers red lines are not included. There is no way to know what the architect or designer will do to a set of drawings. If the changes or clarifications are minimal (15 minutes or less) we do not charge for the changes. If the red lines are sufficient enough for additional charges then you are most likely within your rights to charge the customer for the changes.  In this case we will quote the red line changes so that you know your cost before you quote to your client.
How will I receive my files?
Your review set and your final submittal set are sent to you in pdf format.  When the project is completed and upon your request we will send you the entire autocad file. We also keep all your project files for a period of 5 years.  If you should ever need them in the future just ask.

PAYMENT DETAILS

How much will it cost?
Cost is affected by several factors, those you can control, and those you cannot.

Factors you can control:
1. Level of detail you require for your shop drawings. Average detail will have a lower cost and a high level of detail will result in a higher cost. This is decided in our set up conversations.
2. Amount of information and communication time you are able to provide.

Factors you have minimal control:
1.  Size of project
2.  Quality of architectural documents provided – is all the information there or will it require several conversations to determine what the architect or designer is looking for.
3.  Deadline date – a short lead time will result in a higher cost.

A general rule of thumb for estimating drafting cost, is 3% to 5% of your total mill work contract for a project. The spread is caused again by the complexity of the project in relationship to the time required to complete the task.

All of our jobs are quoted so you will always know up front how much it will cost.

What are your payment terms?
For the first few jobs a 50% deposit is required before we start drawing your project. Final payment is required before you receive your final drawing set.

After we have established a working relationship, you will be invoiced for the full amount of the project quote after receiving your final set of drawings. Payment is due within 15 days.

Do you accept credit cards?
In an effort to keep our costs low we do not accept credit cards. Payment by check is accepted.
